Adultos Inspirados do Curso Prime

The Sound of Silence

Camera Roll-713

Last month, I had a terrible, but beautiful experience in my life. I had, for the first time, a little season at Clube do Choro. Because of my new CD release, called Urubupeba, I had invited some friends and great musicians as special guests.

Alencar 7 Cordas was one of them. On the first day, we were very excited about the music, the show and the public. Alencar has given an unforgettable contribution in the second premiere set. His solo in "Carta ao Niemeyer" was received by the audience with special enthusiasm and amusement.

However, just after he had finished that presentation, he got very bad, had a heart attack and, unfortunately, died. It was terribly sad. His presentation will always be in our souls. Despite the hard impact of his death, we realized that it was a poet's death. In fact, Clube do Choro was, for many years, his favorite place to play music and meet friends.

Because the show had to go on, on the following two days, we still played the tune "Carta ao Niemeyer". However, in Alencar's solo, we just kept the silence, with the band's background. It was very emotional experience to me, to the band and the audience. We've felt as if Alencar was still playing with us.

Alencar has given us his very last lesson: music can be in the sound or in the silence! A long life for you in heaven, Alencar!

2011/1 - Alunos do Elementar Praticam Inglês Criando Livrinhos 3D

"How do you say não consegui acessar minha conta, teacher?"

The Beaver Dam - Smart Phones Apps

The Jazz Show

O aluno André Mateus Valentim Alvim esteve presente no Jazz It Up!, e fez uma redação com suas impressões sobre o evento:

The Jazz Show

This was a unique event that happened at Casa Thomas Jefferson yesterday for people who like jazz. The event started at half past seven with the musicians presentation. One of them is a professional singer, and the others are a good saxophonist and one who played the bass very well. They played many songs and explained the history of Jazz to all the people in the event. Jazz was born in New Orleans, but only made success in New York and then got around to the world. Some Brazilian musicians liked the music and made a mix with Jazz and Samba, inventing Bossa Nova. After the show, there was a lot of food: hot dog, guacamole with snacks, pepper popcorn (New Orleans popcorn) and soda. As you can see, the Jazz show was a wonderful event where everybody learned more about this music style and went home with the stomach full of food.

The Glass Elevator

O aluno Gabriel Goes produziu a seguinte composição que merece destaque:

The  Glass Elevator

Chicago, a cold winter. It's close to twilight and there's snow everywhere. Here I am in this tall building, with my long black coat, frustrated. My name is Thomas Vicenzo and I am 33 years old. I have no family - they were all killed by a rival gang. Actually, not really a gang, but a rival family. I owe everything I still have to the Vicenzo family and that's why I'm in this building. I was supposed to do a job. However, I failed, and now I must go back home. I take the elevator down.

Boiling with frustration, I don't even notice who's in the elevator when I press the button that will lead me to the entrance hall. However, I do notice how beautiful the scenery is, how amazing it is to watch the sunset, with the snow falling, from this glass elevator, and that easesd my mind a little. But suddenly, the lights flash one time and then a blackout takes all of them out and the city becomes dark. The elevator stops.

I start to get worried for as I have failed in my mission, I have to get out of this building soon. Realizing I'll stay in the elevator for a while, I decide to talk to the other two people who are with me, trapped in this glass box. I find out that one of them is a crazy guy with skin in a strange tone of yellow named Homer Simpson, who tried to sell dynamite to people in the building and was "sent home" by police officers after selling some of his product. Not crazily enough, he still wants to eat donuts after escaping this glass box. However, the elevator stands still.

The other person in the elevator is Joseph Easton, who is 71 years old and is currently retired from his old job as a (failed) pimp. Unlike Homer and I, he was going up, to an old friend's room, but not with the best of intentions, according to himself. We discuss how to get the elevator working and I show them my gun, but we decide that it is of no use. Easton introduces himself (or his other face) as a former electrician. The elevator contemplates a glimpse of hope.

Joseph removes the cover of the elevator panel below the buttons. However, it's already night, and the old man can't see a thing. Homer says he has a great idea to provide us with light, and Easton and I exchange a curious look. Simpson turns his back on us and we do see light, but to our complete horror the source of illumination is a dynamite stick! We yell at Homer to put that out, but he says he can't do it. It's a moment of crazy chaos and confusion as we try to get the elevator to work - go up or go down, it does not matter. Slowly, I see my life of loyalty and services to the Vicenzo family fading away, and finally, all my debt and frustration increasing as one flaring spark contrasts with the dark cold night and the glass shatters with our final hopes in the explosion of this burning inferno. The elevator is gone.

Composition - My best Friend

Student: Maria Cristine Branco Lindoso

Level: 4B - Class: 455 - Teacher: Inez Woortmann

My Best Friend

I don't really remember the first time I met Flávia. We were both babies who used to live near each other. Our mothers became friends because when they started talking, they were both pregnant, and they also had a lot in common. So, I have always known her as a sister, a soul sister, and as a best friend who studied at the same school and used to come over to my house every day. Before every important decision, our parents talked to each other in order to know each other's point of view, so our families have always been really close.

friends1

We've known each other for more than 10 years, so, maybe, she knows me more than I know myself! We don't have certain things in common, like seeing life from a different point of view. Flávia is more objective and more centered. She knows exactly what she wants for her life. Well, I don't. I'm not sure about things. I'm much more insecure, while Flávia is very self-confident, and that's what I like most about her. I think that the way we both see things, the way we think about our problems is very different.

We also have things in common. We like to go to the same places, eat the same things, and talk to the same people. We both like to do the same things in our spare time.

Looking back at my friendship with Flávia, I think she is one of the best things that ever happened to me. She is the kind of friend that you can call any time and she'll be ready to help you. She always gives the best advice, says the best things when you're looking sad, and is always happy when you are. Maybe I should thank our moms for having been friends before we were born. Maybe I should thank her for changing and influencing all my opinions and decisions so strongly. But I know that she is always going to be the best medicine for my sadness.

Composition - How I got the idea for this composition

Student: Tito Henriques Issa Gomes Pato

Level: 4B - Class: 455 - Teacher: Inez Woortmann

How I got the idea for this composition

This story happened less than two weeks before this composition was written, actually. And here's how it was: last year, my father would pick my brother and I up, but now, he is taking doing a specialization course at FGV, so we have to walk to the bus stop and take the bus home.

We got to the bus stop, a little tired from the walk, but no other problems than this I sat down then started looking through my backpack for the money, since my pass didn't have anymore credits. Realizing neither I nor my brother had enough for the two of us, I had one of those movie flashbacks: it was early that day, in the car, and my mom was asking if we had money, like every other day, and that time I was sure I had enough.

After some yelling at each other, we decided to call "the woman from the flashback" and our dad who was having a test right at the moment. The solution: going "for free" and having mom stay at the bus stop near home and pay for it. Look a while mainly because we missed a bus, and when we did catch it, the woman in charge of collecting the money told us to pay for me and let my mom pay for my brother. If I recall correctly the collector didn't want my mom's money, so this was actually pretty productive: I got a story for a composition and three bucks!

Folk Costumes around the Globe - class 46 - Matriz

Class 46, in the Main branch, participated in an international project called Folk Costumes around the Globe. We joined this project, while we were discussing some customs of other cultures in our book.

During the project we learned a little about Kimonos and how and when they are worn, so when it was our turn to teach something about Brazil, we decided to talk about June parties, which are happening now around the country.

Each group researched and prepared a few sentences on each topic and one of the classmates was responsible for putting the information together into a Power Point Presentation. We were all very proud to see it in an international site.

Teens 4 - Class 41 - Teacher Lisel Fleury - My Perfect School

Students show here what they believe the PERFECT SCHOOL would be like ... It is always good to be able to dream of an ideal school or world, and letting our imagination and creativity express that sounds like a great idea! So that's what my dear Teens 4 students did! As their teacher, I not only appreciated their work, but also had fun with them.

A Great Person (Composition)

The person who has inspired me the most in my life is my mother. Normally she is a very disciplined and studious person. She is also a hardworker and is very motivated. She's a Pediatrician and HIV specialist.  She had retired but decided to do another public contest to continue working. Another aspect for which I admire her is that she is very generous with her patients and with people in general. She's already bought medicines for her poor patients. Sometimes she gives them her mobile phone number and even when she is traveling on vacation, she always answers it. She helps a lot of charity institutions, too. Because of her qualities, I think she is a really good and generous person. Whenever she has the opportunity to help people, she does it. Besides this, she is a very positive, nurturing and easygoing mother. In addition, she is very friendly, too. I get along very well with her. She is my best friend.

A GIFTED PERSON

I think Mr. President of the Republic, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva is a gifted person.

He was born in 1945, in Vargem Grande (Caetés), Pernambuco. He was one of eight children.

In 1952 his family moved to São Paulo, in order to find a better place to live, as millions of people from NorthEast used to do. They traveled 13 days on a pau-de-arara (a truck adapted to carry people on a trip).

In São Paulo they first lived in Guarujá. But life in this city was expensive and difficult to find job, so his mother decided to move to São Paulo, Capital, where they lived for many years.

Lula started working as a boot black when he was twelve. His family was very poor, but very happy too. Lula and his brothers worked hard during the week to help their mother buying food, clothes, and other needs they had. In his spare times he went to fields playing soccer or to do other nice things in the street, as all children did.

When he was fourteen he had his first job as an employee. He started working as a cleaner. He worked 12 hours a day, but he had enough time to study. So, in 1963 he applied to a course at Senai which made him able to work in a factory. One year later he got a new job at Metalúrgica Aliança to work at night. One night a workmate of his fell asleep and pressed Lula´s left hand in the machine. It was the way his smallest finger was cut off.

In 1966 he went to work at Indústrias Villares. At this time he started his political career, as a worker of a trade union. Sometimes later he married Maria de Lourdes, a workmate of his. A time later she was sent to the hospital to have their first baby. But she and the kid died. So, Lula felt down and went through a sad time in his life.

He worked hard at the trade union. As time passed he became famous in all the country. In 1972 he was elected First Secretary of Sindicato dos Metalúrgicos of São Bernardo do Campo and Diadema, São Paulo.

In 1974 he met Marisa Letícia. She was widow as he was. She had a boy, Marcos Cláudio. They got married and nowadays they have three children.

From 1975 to 1978 he was elected two times as president of Sindicato dos Metalúrgicos and became the leader of the strikes of ABC, the most important movements of workers that fought against the military government in Brazil.

In 1980 he known knew intellectuals and academic men and decided to found the worker’s Party (Partido dos Trabalhadores), that was very important for him. This party has elected politicians in all sphere of government in all the country. In 1986 Lula was elected with 650 thousand votes to National Constituint Assembly.

From 1989, he was candidate to president of the Republic four times. In 2002 he was elected the first worker who won the election for president of the Republic of Brazil. In 2005 he was reelected, and nowadays his government is approved by 78% of Brazilian people. Also, he is admired by most of the world’s countries.

How to improve life in our city

There are many problems we can see in Brasília as a city. For me, our biggest problem is transportation. Our transportation system is expensive and ineffective. I take about one hour to get a bus from my house to the bus station. It could easily be done in 15 minutes if I used a car. Besides, almost half of my salary is spent on bus tickets. I think that if the transportation network had been better developed transportation would be more effective. Besides, if bus companies charged a single permanent value for unlimited transportation, people would be more likely to pay for it.

Another problem in Brasília is that culture cannot be accessed by all the people. Firstly, because it is too expensive. Secondly, leisure and cultural centers are often inaccessible by bus. I would like more cultural attractions. If this is not possible, I would like that there be buses that took me there. I would also like that cultural attractions, like theater plays for instance, be more accessible.

One more problem is that there aren't many people in the streets. We should a have more lively community life. This can be solved by the creation of activities that gather people together in their neighborhoods. Common activities such as sports, art crafts and public events might contribute to the empowerment of community life.

It is clear that these problems are mixed. Solving one may help to solve other problems. For example, if the transportation system worked properly, it would be easier to go to plays and cultural events in general.  Thus, this would improve access to cultural life. As cultural venues allow people to interact, community life may become better. It is important, then, to think of solutions globally, not specifically.

by Felipe Parreira:

THE TEACHER

It was my first day at school and I was very proud of myself, because I was now in the fifth grade. I was growing up and getting older. In fact, I was very excited. But something let me down…

He got into the class and seriously asked for our names. However, the situation got worse: the angry man said he was our math teacher. I was disappointed. How could the teacher of the best subject (at least I thought it was) be unhappy? He seemed arrogant and unfriendly. Nevertheless, he could teach well, I thought. He sat down on his chair and, after a few seconds, he said in a low voice that he had forgotten something extremely important at home. Then, he disappeared through the door. The final result was that he didn’t come back to the classroom. Besides everything, he was irresponsible. I couldn’t even know his name. Although he would have more chances to show me that he was a good teacher, the first impression I had of the math teacher wasn´t good.

However, Renato (he told us his name in the following class) showed he was different. At first, he was a little shy, because he didn’t know us well, but, when he got to know us better, he became a friendly, funny and interesting person. His classes weren’t always the same; and we could understand the subject better, because he taught us in different ways. Moreover, he joked with the students and sang weird songs to make people laugh. No one could be sad after his class. On the other hand, when he was teaching, everybody paid attention to him, because as he said he wasn´t teaching math, he was sharing secrets with us, and very interesting secrets. In addition, he motivated us, showing that math is easy.

Once, I got a low grade on the math test. I told him that the night before the test I had had a  fever and a terrible headache, so I couldn´t sleep well at night. Although he knew I was a good student, I thought he wouldn´t accept it, he would probably say “Do better next time”. Nonetheless, he offered to help me. The deal was that if I taught the class the Pythagoras theorem, my new grade would be a hundred.
Thus, I had two days to study and learn all about it. Two days later, at half past seven in the morning, his class started, but I was the teacher. I taught everything I had learnt about the Pythagoras theorem and, after the explanation about it, he asked me many questions and I answered all of them. “ Teacher, may I drink some water?”, he asked me after asking about the theorem. Since then, I could understand that he wasn´t only a funny and interesting person, but he was also a good friend, he was worried about his students.

In short, Renato was not only a professional, he was a human being, a person, and it was clear to everybody. However, he was special, he was defying and simple, relentless and calm, strict but fair. He loved math, but he loved us more. He changed everyone´s life and I can divide mine in two parts: before and after knowing him. He showed us how surprising life is and how interesting life can be if we want to. He wanted us to have good grades and good lives, too.
