ONDE ESTÁ VOCÊ?

Intercâmbio em Vancouver - Rodolfo Fava

Olá, amigos! Contarei aqui a minha experiência de intercâmbio sendo um ex-aluno da CTJ, tendo começado aos 8 anos e me formado aos 16. Cheguei em Vancouver no final de Janeiro, para um programa de intercâmbio que irá durar 5 meses no total, cursando o High School, o equivalente ao Ensino Médio no Brasil. Pude notar que consigo me comunicar fluentemente com os canadenses, a escola é bem diferente, aos alunos é permitida a escolha de 3 a 4 matérias, de acordo com suas particularidades, gostos, ou mesmo suas ambições acadêmicas, sendo as restantes obrigatórias: Inglês, uma ciência, Estudos Sociais e Matemática.

Como estrangeiro, fui submetido a um teste de ESL (English as Second Language) e fui classificado como nível 4, o melhor que pode ser alcançado. Com a minha elevada pontuação, me foi permitido cursar o Inglês que os próprios canadenses cursam. Depois ainda descobri que poucos intercambistas alcançam essa proeza, mas acredito que me preparei bem nesses últimos anos como aluno da CTJ. As aulas de ESL 4 realmente me decepcionaram, a maioria dos alunos ainda tem dificuldade em ler e se comunicar em inglês.

Porém, na aula de Inglês normal, foi exigido mais de mim: nesse mês de fevereiro passado fizemos diversos trabalhos baseados no livro em que escolhemos ler, dentre três opções, relacionando-os com "Questões Essenciais" que tratavam de moral, comportamento, e sociedade. Ou seja, a aula de Inglês daqui não é correspondente a aula de Português do Brasil, não se limitando apenas à gramática, mas sim expandindo a áreas de conhecimento como Sociologia e Literatura.

Estou adorando a experiência de conhecer novas culturas e pessoas, de praticar o inglês num país totalmente diferente do Brasil. Sou muito grato a esses 8 anos que passei como estudante da CTJ e ao maravilhoso trabalho dos profissionais envolvidos no meu aprendizado. Ao fim do intercâmbio, pretendo pretendo cursar a prova do Michigan, cujo diploma expandirá meus horizontes tanto profissional como pessoal.

Encorajo qualquer um a fazer intercâmbio, mesmo aqueles que ainda não se formaram, o inglês ficará mais fluente e a experiência em si já faz valer a pena.

Marcos Joaquim Pereira

O nosso ex-aluno Marcos Joaquim é o representante de Brasília no programa Legislative Fellows da Partnes of the America. O programa é projetado para levar jovens profissionais estrangeiros para os Estados Unidos para um Fellowship, ou seja, estágio, focado no sistema legislativo, por cinco semanas em organizações relacionadas ao sua área de especialização, seguido de Fellowships recíprocas por três semanas para profissionais dos EUA. Confira a entrevista com o Marcos, ele nos conta tudo sobre sua participação no programa:

CTJOnline: Marcos, de onde partiu a ideia para participar do programa Legislative Fellows dos Partners of Americas?

Marcos: Tive conhecimento do Legislative Fellows por meio de um amigo, que me repassou o email sobre o programa. Na ocasião, eu li o email e fiquei interessado imediatamente, pois dois anos antes tive um oportunidade parecida que foi muito enriquecedora. Vi que preenchia os requisitos estabelecidos pelo programa e resolvi completar os formulários para formalizar minha candidatura. Respondi um questionário, encaminhei meu currículo e apresentei uma carta de recomendação do meu empregador e pronto. Algumas semanas depois recebi a resposta de que havia sido aceito no programa.

 

CTJOnline: Você é ex-aluno da Casa Thomas Jefferson, por quanto tempo você e estudou aqui e como a Casa Thomas Jefferson contribuiu para a sua participação no programa?

Marcos: Tenho orgulho de dizer que a minha história de vida confude-se com a história da Thomas. Lembro-me de estudar na Thomas quando ela ainda funcionava perto da Casa do Ceará. Fui aluno também na Thomas quando ela funcionava na entrequadra 708/709 norte. Quando conclui meu curso de inglês (básico, intermediário e avançado), a Thomas já estava funcionando na L2 norte. Continuei fazendo vários cursos para manter o idioma sempre afiado: Pre Test, Advanced Grammar, Business, entre outros. Tenho, então, aproximadamente mais de 18 anos de convivência com a Thomas.

Como os participantes são obrigados a ter proficiência em inglês, informei na minha candidatura que havia estudado na Thomas (além de outras experiências internacionais). Veja, quando informei que tinha feito meus estudos na CTJ, isso saltou aos olhos dos avaliadores da minha candidatura. Foi como se eu tivesse um "pedigree" ou um título de nobreza. A CTJ não é apenas uma escola de inglês. E um centro binacional, com objetivo de promover intercâmbio cultural entre Brasil e EUA. O programa, então, seria uma extensão de um trabalho que começou a ser construído há muito tempo. O fato de ter estudado na Thomas fez com eu tivesse um selo de qualidade não apenas, de inglês, mas de cidadania, profissionalismo e colaboração.

CTJOnline: Qual são as expectativas de contribuição do programa para a sua formação profissional e acadêmica?

Marcos: As expectativas de contribuição do programa para minha formação profissional e acadêmica são fortes. Profissionamente terei a oportunidade de construir relacionamentos com pessoas diferentes envolvidas em trabalhos semelhantes ao desempenhado por mim aqui no Brasil; poderei dividir minhas experiências profissionais em situações distintas; e fortalecerei minha capacidade de defender e promover a indústria brasileira. Academicamente, minha participação no programa abre portas para, no futuro, dar continuidade aos estudos nos EUA, se assim desejado. O programa é um reconhecimento do meu trabalho como fonte de transformação da comunidade e do país, de liderança e de inovação.

CTJOnline: Na sua opinião, os assuntos que serão abordados durante o programa são aplicáveis à realidade que vivemos atualmente no Brasil?

Marcos: Acredito que os assuntos que serão abordados no programa são aplicáveis à realidade que vivemos no Brasil. Quero citar um exemplo. Ao que tudo indica, devo realizar o programa junto ao Departamento de Trabalho e Desenvolvimento Econômico do Estado de Minnesota, mais precisamente no escritório de comércio exterior. Tive a oportunidade de verificar o trabalho realizado pelo departamento e vi que eles sao bem atuantes na promoção das empresas americanas, principalmente em relação à China. Ora, a China tambem é um dos maiores parceiros comerciais do Brasil. Vai ser uma oportunidade enriquecedora poder ver de perto o trabalho nessa área.

CTJOnline: Você pode nos citar algo do sistema legislativo americano que o Brasil poderia adotar e também algo no sistema legislativo brasileiro que poderá contribuir positivamente para o governo deles?

Marcos: A legislação brasileira de micro e pequena empresa é uma das melhores do mundo, embora possa ainda ser aperfeiçoada. O tratamento favorecido e diferenciado dado a elas e inclusive objeto de elogio do FMI, por exemplo. Acho que esse seria um exemplo. Ficaria contente se as agências reguladoras brasileiras tivesse a autonomia que as agências reguladoras americanas tem. Isso é algo que ate hoje não foi feito e acredito que poderíamos aprender muito com a legislação americana.

 

CTJOnline: Agora, gostaríamos de saber o que você tem a dizer para as pessoas que também tem interesse em participar de programas como esse...

Marcos: Bem, para os interessados em participar de programas como esse, diria que tudo começa com a procura. Corra atrás, pergunte a amigos, faca pesquisas na internet, fale com conhecidos sobre seu interesse nesse tipo de programa: as possibilidades são enormes. Tenha sempre um currículo em inglês para ganhar tempo também. Isso ajuda bastante. Uma carta de apresentação e uma carta de apoio da entidade em que o interessado estude ou trabalha ajuda bastante tambem. Saiba descrever bem o que faz e o que quer fazer - minuciosa e criativamente. Esteja aberto a novas experiências e, acima de tudo, capaz de transformar ideias em realidade.

CTJ: How Long were you a student at CTJ? How did your experience at CTJ help you in London?

TATYANNA: I was a student at CTJ for 8 years. I learned almost everything I know with the classes at CTJ. The teachers always helped me a lot and the lessons were always helpful and fun!

 

CTJ: Tell us a little bit about your stay in London. What were your first impressions of your host family, the neighborhood, the people, etc?

TATYANNA: I've been here since September 2011, and I'm loving every minute of my stay! My host family is wonderful! They were very receptive and very kind to me, helping me with everything I needed. They are my second family right now, and I will miss them a lot when I come back to Brazil. The neighborhood is lovely, and everybody is really polite.

 

CTJ: What has been your biggest adventure in London so far?

TATYANNA: Some weeks ago I spent the night in London with my best friend, Angélica, to watch a concert. We went on our own and it was amazing! When we were at the queue to enter the venue, it started to snow! It was a magical moment for both of us, since we had never seen snow until that moment. It was one of the best days of my life!

 

CTJ: What are your plans for the future? Would you rather stay in London than come back to Brazil?

TATYANNA: When I come back to Brazil, I will finish High School and then, hopefully, pass the Vestibular test for the course I want: International Affairs. I also want to learn at least three more languages: Spanish, French and Italian. I love living in the UK, but I know that my place is in my hometown, Brasília. I would love to come back here some time, but just on holiday.

 

CTJ: Did you appreciate learning about a different culture? Did you have any cultural shock?

TATYANNA: Learning and being able to understand different cultures is one of my passions! I absolutely love to learn more and more about different countries and their habits, their language, their culture in general. One of the "cultural shocks" I had here, was about the weather. I was used to the warm, tropical weather of my country, and there are days here in England that can be pretty cold. Of course, after some time you get used to the cold, windy days, but in the beginning it was really strange for me.

 

CTJ: What would you like to say to the people here in Brazil who have never been in an exchange program?

TATYANNA: You don't know what you're missing! Seriously, I think everyone should be in an exchange program at least once in their lives. You can't imagine how much you grow when you experience different cultures. You start to look at the world differently - and it's a good thing! After the exchange program, you are certainly more mature, more responsible and more sociable. It's the best experience of my whole life!

 

CTJ: What is your biggest dream after visiting this amazing place?

TATYANNA: To visit more amazing places! I want to travel the world, always learning more and more. Furthermore, one of my biggest dreams is to become a successful diplomat.

Rafaela Nogueira Lannes

Rafaela Nogueira Lannes was a student at Casa Thomas Jefferson until June 2009, when her family moved to California, in the U.S. Check out the interview she gave us about studying in an American High School.

 

CTJ: How long did you study at CTJ?

RAFAELA: CTJ was the one and only English course! I started in the very beginning, Popcorn 1 (omg, it's been such a long time…), seven years ago.

 

CTJ: How has studying English at Thomas helped you?

RAFAELA: Thomas Jefferson helped me a lot. Seriously, I think my adaptation to the U.S. would not have been as natural as it turned out to be, if I hadn't had all those CTJ years. It was so important to learn everything I learned there, because it was not only grammar, it was also the day-to-day language. Although I hadn't  graduated yet, Thomas gave me an awesome base, so much so that I passed the California High School Exit Eamination (CAHSEE) on my very first try ! This is a precondition for High School graduation, and is considered a difficult test

 

CTJ: What was your first experience in an American school like?

RAFAELA: It was and still is amazing! At the beginning, it was kind of different, because I was in another country, I had to live in another culture, and I had moved to a new school where I didn't know anyone. But I got used to all of this so fast ! It's awesome to study in and be part of a real American High School, complete with cheerleaders (me included !!), the football team (Go, Cougars !!), the prom, and friends I'll never forget.

 

 

 

CTJ: Tell us a little more about your life in the US and your plans for the future.

RAFAELA: I live in California, in a city by the San Francisco Bay. It's a great place to live. My life is pretty much like any other High School senior's: besides school  during the week, on weekends I hang out with my friends. And everyday I talk to my boyfriend, who stayed in Brasília. I will go back to Brazil next July and I'll do my best to go to college next year. And you know what ? I'll keep on studying English, because it's a tool for life.

 

 

Isabela Brasileiro

How long were you a student at CTJ?

I started my CTJ classes when I was 13 (in 2001) and I graduated at the age of 19. At first, I began studying English just because my parents wanted, but it was cool in the first levels. But then, as I went through the books, it started to get harder and I started to have so many difficulties that I wanted to stop studying English. However, when I got to the advanced level, I began liking English in a way I never thought I would.

When did you graduate?

I graduated at the beginning of the second semester of 2007, because I chose to do the winter course, which was taught by a great teacher, Ronaldo Lima Junior, who, more than the knowledge, brought us lots of unforgettable and funny moments. By the way, unfortunately, I couldn’t go to the graduation because of an invitation I got to become an international model.

How did your career as a model begin?

Since I was 16, many people used to tell me to go through a model career, because I was tall and had posture. However, I never liked this idea very much, and, to be honest, I thought that being a model could be really boring, even liking the profession. Then, one day a booker, the person who chooses models, told me that I had a good profile and I should be a good model to work abroad, because of my height and my body. Consequently, that was when I started to think about it, because I always had a great interest in living abroad and getting to know new cultures. My first job as a model was in BFF (Brasília Fashion Festival), and, when it was almost July of 2007, I received an invitation to work in Milan. That was when I decided to take the CTJ intensive winter course.

Tell us a bit more about your international experiences now and for the future.

Even though 2007 was a year full of great surprises, 2008 will be a much busier and even more amazing year regarding jobs, especially the international ones.

After a season of 3 months in Milan, I went to Argentina and stayed for 3 weeks just for a one-week job. Then I came back to Brazil where I will be until the 28th of February. On this day, I'll go to Costa Rica, where I'll stay for 2 weeks for a TV recording and then I'll be back to Milan to follow a 3-month contract.

It is amazing to travel this much, I'm enjoying it a lot. More than that, getting to know new cultures and languages is awesome, even though I speak only English in all those trips. Hahaha.
