A politically incorrect experience
I had a politically incorrect experience in San Antonio, during the TESOL Convention, that I think is worth sharing. There I was in the women’s restroom, between conferences, standing in line against the wall, waiting for my turn to use one of the stalls, when I turned and saw a young man behind me (very short hair, male cut, black polo shirt tucked inside white jeans). My first reaction was to think that I was in the wrong restroom, but as I looked ahead of me and behind the young man, I saw that everybody else was visibly female. That was when I missed the opportunity to keep my mouth shut and spoke to my neighbor.
“This is the ladies’,” I said.
“I’m all woman,” he answered. “You??!!”
“Oh, ok,” I replied. And fortunately went on to take care of my business, as one of the stalls was disoccupied and it was my turn.
